Communications and Control Room

USS Carl Vinson

“Good morning, Commander Brayzack.” said a man wearing a U.S. naval uniform decorated with more medals than the commander had ever seen packed onto one chest. “I’m secretary of the Navy, Adam Colburn.” He then said with a smile as he extended his hand.

“Yes, sir, I am aware of whom you are, and it’s a pleasure to meet you.” The commander responded taking his hand.

“Well, commander, let me introduce you to some of my colleagues then, or should I say our colleagues.” Gesturing to the man immediately to the secretary’s right, he began introductions. “This is Third Fleet Admiral, Ben Stevens.” The grey haired man leaned forward shaking Commander Brayzack’s hand firmly, but moistly. “And this is General Patrick Hanes of the United States Army.” He also followed suit with a perfunctory handshake. Like the secretary, both men adorned their respective uniforms that carried just as many metals.

Commander Brayzack could tell that he had falsely assumed the meeting was going to be the usual, let’s all get on the same page with our progress reports, and make sure we’re all up to speed—but he knew with having men of such high-ranking stature sitting in on the meeting it was clear something else was going down.

“I’d also like you to meet, Stan Rutherford, assistant to the under-secretary of the Department of Defense.” Secretary Colburn added. “He will be overseeing our efforts on this matter on behalf of Defense Secretary Matthews.”

“We’ve met before.” Brayzack replied as he shot Rutherford an abhorrent look.

Secretary Colburn seemed to have sensed the tension that was coming of the commander. He paused for a moment as if to say something, but then went on finishing introductions. “Of course I’m sure you know Governor Lewis?”

“Yes, of course. It’s good to see you again, governor.” said Commander Brayzack as the two men shook hands. “Finally, we have Rick Islington of the CIA’s counterterrorism task force.”

Once the secretary finished speaking, Brayzack introduced the two gentlemen who had accompanied him to the meeting. Secretary Colburn asked him why he felt that a sergeant and a private 1st class were needed to accompany him. The commander then informed him and the room that he had made Sergeant Barnes and Private 1st Jarvis his special assistants to his investigation of the outbreak.

Secretary Colburn looked around the room at the other men and asked. “Well, I don’t see any harm in these men sitting in. Does anybody object?” The room held silent at first, then there was a few inaudible murmurs followed by somebody saying. “No, not at all.” “Alright then, let’s all have a seat and get down to business.” The secretary said as he motioned to Commander Brayzack and his assistants to have a seat at the long mahogany table anchored at the center of the room.

“Well, gentlemen,” Secretary Colburn began. “Let me make it clear that what is to be discussed in this room stays in this room. Do we all understand?” The room held silent in agreement and then he began again.
